Dr. Seuss's Birthday Craft

I love to make a big deal out of Dr. Seuss's birthday here at the library.  To celebrate next month on March 2, 2013 I'm going to have a Lorax Day!  I put together my own Truffula Tree using a small Styrofoam ball, squares of tissue paper and an unsharpened pencil. Lorax Day will include time to make this adorable tree and then watch the new Lorax movie.

What you need to make this Truffula Tree:
Pencils-unsharpened
Small Styrofoam Balls
Tissue paper (any color) cut into squares. Mine are about 1 1/2" square (they are not cut perfectly)
Glue sticks (liquid glue was too runny and took to long to dry)
Scissors

  • Use the scissors to punch a hole into the Styrofoam ball, just enough to be able to work the pencil in.
  • Stick the pencil into the hole just made eraser end first
  • Using the glue stick apply glue on the ball near the pencil base
  • Take squares of tissue paper and scrunch them
  • Place scrunched tissue paper to the ball covered in glue

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
